Abstract
This study presents the results of interdisciplinary research on a unique osseous projectile point bearing visible traces of a black, pitch-like substance, discovered in 2022 during an underwater visual survey of the Žeimena River bed in eastern Lithuania. Radiocarbon dating of the adhesive residue and a suite of physicochemical analyses were applied to investigate the artefact and its hafting material. Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS) and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) analyses support the identification of the organic substance as birch bark tar. Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) provided insights into the animal origin of the raw material used in the artifact’s manufacture. Detailed microscopic analysis provided insights into the final stages of manufacture and the hafting procedure. The results are discussed in relation to current knowledge of Mesolithic osseous projectile points in Europe.

Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences covers the full spectrum of natural scientific methods with an emphasis on the archaeological contexts and the questions being studied. It bridges the gap between archaeologists and natural scientists providing a forum to encourage the continued integration of scientific methodologies in archaeological research.
Coverage in the journal includes: archaeology, geology/geophysical prospection, geoarchaeology, geochronology, palaeoanthropology, archaeozoology and archaeobotany, genetics and other biomolecules, material analysis and conservation science.
The journal is endorsed by the German Society of Natural Scientific Archaeology and Archaeometry (GNAA), the Hellenic Society for Archaeometry (HSC), the Association of Italian Archaeometrists (AIAr) and the Society of Archaeological Sciences (SAS).
