Abstract

Although the concept of the embodied sense of self has attracted considerable interest from researchers around the world, research in this field is yet to be initiated in Arab nations. This study proposes to adapt and validate the Embodied Sense of Self Scale (ESSS) to the Arabic context and language. The study has a cross-sectional design and was performed during March-May 2024 among 502 Arabic-speaking adults using an online questionnaire. Our study replicated the three-factor model (i.e. Ownership, Narrative, and Agency) of the ESSS with an acceptable fit. The reliability analysis was good for the total score (α = 0.88) and for the three factors (α = 0.74-0.80). Measurement invariance across sex was established at the scalar, metric, and configural levels. ESSS scores significantly correlated with empathy, anxiety, depression, and stress. The Arabic ESSS is shown to be valid, reliable and ready for use in Arabic-speaking adults and Arab contexts.
