Abstract
Low-profile planar antennas are widely deployed on various radar platforms. This letter presents a Ka-band fully metallic planar slot antenna integrated with a sum–difference power divider network for synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Each four-unit radiating element consists of four four-leaf-clover radiating cavities, a cross-slot coupling cavity, and a longitudinal feed waveguide, which features high gain, high efficiency, and simple configuration. The element has an electrical size of 2.36λ0 × 2.36λ0, delivering a gain over 18.3 dBi and aperture utilization efficiency above 97%. Utilizing large-aperture high-gain elements reduces the total array element number, simplifies the feed topology, and lowers design complexity. The proposed design addresses the narrowband limitation of waveguide slot arrays and high-loss drawback of microstrip planar arrays. The fabricated 4 × 8 array realizes a measured realized gain higher than 32.5 dBi, aperture utilization efficiency over 88%, fractional bandwidth wider than 8.6%, and first sidelobe level below −18 dB. This antenna provides a promising design scheme for miniaturized SAR planar antennas.
期刊介绍:
IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters (AWP Letters) is devoted to the rapid electronic publication of short manuscripts in the technical areas of Antennas and Wireless Propagation. These are areas of competence for the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S). AWPL aims to be one of the "fastest" journals among IEEE publications. This means that for papers that are eventually accepted, it is intended that an author may expect his or her paper to appear in IEEE Xplore, on average, around two months after submission.
