Abstract
This research synthesizes prior evidence on the effectiveness of financial market sustainability initiatives (FMSIs) in green bond markets. Our analysis of 45 peer‐reviewed studies, including 42 quantitative empirical studies with 169 codable FMSI–outcome relationships, shows that FMSIs are most consistently associated with favorable financial market outcomes when they improve credibility, comparability, or interpretability of green bond information. Pricing evidence differs between primary and secondary markets. Across both segments, greenness assurance provides the broadest pricing evidence base, whereas regulation and policy show the most favorable evidence balance on a narrower base. Outside pricing, evidence remains limited for issuer behavior, relative green allocation, and environmental attribution. We propose a life cycle–based research framework linking information and agency problems to five stages of the green bond process and identify future research directions concerning FMSI interactions, institutional conditions, and participation costs. Our findings provide design implications for issuers, investors, regulators, and information intermediaries.

Business Strategy and the Environment (BSE) is a leading academic journal focused on business strategies for improving the natural environment. It publishes peer-reviewed research on various topics such as systems and standards, environmental performance, disclosure, eco-innovation, corporate environmental management tools, organizations and management, supply chains, circular economy, governance, green finance, industry sectors, and responses to climate change and other contemporary environmental issues. The journal aims to provide original contributions that enhance the understanding of sustainability in business. Its target audience includes academics, practitioners, business managers, and consultants. However, BSE does not accept papers on corporate social responsibility (CSR), as this topic is covered by its sibling journal Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. The journal is indexed in several databases and collections such as ABI/INFORM Collection, Agricultural & Environmental Science Database, BIOBASE, Emerald Management Reviews, GeoArchive, Environment Index, GEOBASE, INSPEC, Technology Collection, and Web of Science.
