Abstract
The carbonation resistance of self-compacting recycled aggregate concrete (SCRAC) is of great importance for its durability design. However, existing prediction models poorly capture the effects of recycled aggregate content and CO2 concentration. This study investigates the carbonation behavior of SCRAC through accelerated carbonation tests, theoretical model, and numerical model, with recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratio (0–100%) and CO2 concentration (20–95%) as the primary variables. Results showed carbonation depth increased monotonically with both replacement ratio and CO2 concentration. The carbonation depth of full recycled aggregate concrete increased by 52.0% compared to natural aggregate concrete. Based on Fick's second law, a theoretical prediction model was developed. The model reduced the error by about 22% compared with the Chinese standard model. A COMSOL model incorporating modified diffusion and reaction coefficients reproduced the measurements within a 10% relative error. The model offers a calibrated empirical relationship for estimating the carbonation depth of SCRAC under accelerated carbonation conditions.
