Abstract
Acute injuries of the shoulder girdle commonly result from sports activities and lead to imaging studies. Radiologists who interpret these studies should be familiar with traumatic mechanisms and the imaging manifestations of glenohumeral dislocation, acromioclavicular sprain, rotator cuff tear, labral tear, osseous contusion or fracture, and myotendinous strain. Imaging findings are crucial for making accurate diagnoses, grading the severity of injuries, guiding treatment plans, and managing the athletes' expectations for rehabilitation and return to sport. In this review article, we address common and uncommon injuries in both young and mature athletes. Focusing on magnetic resonance imaging, we provide examples of classic injuries and discuss pitfalls that challenge diagnostic interpretation.

Skeletal Radiology provides a forum for the dissemination of current knowledge and information dealing with disorders of the musculoskeletal system including the spine. While emphasizing the radiological aspects of the many varied skeletal abnormalities, the journal also adopts an interdisciplinary approach, reflecting the membership of the International Skeletal Society. Thus, the anatomical, pathological, physiological, clinical, metabolic and epidemiological aspects of the many entities affecting the skeleton receive appropriate consideration.
This is the Journal of the International Skeletal Society and the Official Journal of the Society of Skeletal Radiology and the Australasian Musculoskelelal Imaging Group.
