Abstract

The properties of a structural material can be synergetically complemented by a thin layer (<~5 μm) of another material with functional properties. The most important coating technologies are wet chemical and gas phase methods, such as chemical and physical vapor deposition (CVD and PVD) or sol-gel, layer-by-layer and electrochemical methods. The case studies presented in this article are layers with different functions in integrated circuits, transparent conducting oxide films, corrosion protection layers and antimicrobial and flame-retarding coatings.
