Abstract

This study investigates the use of vegetable oils as sustainable diluents in the reactive extraction of tartaric acid (TA) using trioctylamine (TOA). Their performance was compared with 1-octanol as a reference solvent. All oils showed comparable efficiencies, with canola oil (CNO) performing slightly better. Extraction was strongly affected by pH, temperature, and concentrations. The highest efficiency was obtained at the natural pH (1.42), whereas higher temperatures and TA concentrations reduced performance. Increasing TOA concentration improved extraction. Under optimal conditions (0.2 M TA, 1.0 M TOA, and 298.15 K), efficiencies reached 91% (distribution coefficient, KD = 10.11) for CNO and 97.2% (KD = 35.1) for 1-octanol. More than 99% of TA was recovered from the loaded organic phase, and the organic phase was reused with minimal loss. These results demonstrate that vegetable oils are promising green alternatives for TA extraction.
