Abstract

The nanoscratching behaviour of a polycrystalline CuCrCoFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) coating on a Cu substrate was investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. The influence of scratch velocity and depth on mechanical response, wear characteristics, and microstructural evolution has been studied. The coefficient of friction increases slightly with velocity but increases significantly with scratch depth. At higher velocities or greater depths, the stacked fault network gradually fragments, creating dislocation rings, ladder-like dislocations, and localised amorphous regions, which help dissipate energy. The HEA coating withstands most deformations, demonstrating its protective role for the Cu substrate even when the scratch depth is close to the coating thickness.

The Journal of Materials Science publishes reviews, full-length papers, and short Communications recording original research results on, or techniques for studying the relationship between structure, properties, and uses of materials. The subjects are seen from international and interdisciplinary perspectives covering areas including metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers, electrical materials, composite materials, fibers, nanostructured materials, nanocomposites, and biological and biomedical materials. The Journal of Materials Science is now firmly established as the leading source of primary communication for scientists investigating the structure and properties of all engineering materials.
