Abstract
A ternary heterostructure WO3/Fe2O3/GO (WFG) nanocomposite for effective photocatalytic hydrogen production under irradiation of visible light is synthesized by hydrothermal process. The combination of GO with WO3/Fe2O3 heterostructure improved visible light absorption and interfacial charge separation, leading to a lowered optical band gap of 1.96 eV along with enhanced charge-transfer properties. Under visible light exposure in a Na2S/Na2SO3 sacrificial system, WFG demonstrated a hydrogen evolution of 25.26 mmol g−1 over 10 h corresponding to HER of 2.526 mmol g−1 h−1. The increased activity was supported by PL, EIS, Mott–Schottky, and VB-XPS analysis which indicated reduced charge recombination and beneficial interfacial electronic interactions. The photocatalyst maintained its effectiveness across six consecutive cycles showing strong stability which is further supported by post-reaction XRD, FTIR, XPS, and TEM. An estimated apparent quantum efficiency of around 4.41% suggests effective use of visible light photons. These results indicate that WO3/Fe2O3/GO (WFG) nanocomposite is a potential photocatalyst for visible light-induced hydrogen production.

The Journal of Materials Science publishes reviews, full-length papers, and short Communications recording original research results on, or techniques for studying the relationship between structure, properties, and uses of materials. The subjects are seen from international and interdisciplinary perspectives covering areas including metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers, electrical materials, composite materials, fibers, nanostructured materials, nanocomposites, and biological and biomedical materials. The Journal of Materials Science is now firmly established as the leading source of primary communication for scientists investigating the structure and properties of all engineering materials.
