Abstract—The texture and lattice parameters of Al–Cu–Li alloy sheets in various sections and at various distances from the surface are determined by X-ray diffraction. The lattice strain and residual stresses in the direction normal to each section are determined from the difference between the lattice parameters for each section and their average value. For all alloys, compressive stresses are found in the direction normal to the sheet plane. Their magnitude is minimal (less than 5 MPa) for 1441 and V-1461 alloys with a T1 (Al2CuLi) phase content less than 2.2 wt % and reaches –29 MPa for V-1469, V-1480, and V-1481 alloys with a T1-phase content of 4.3–6.2 wt %. These differences are interpreted using experimental data on the texture of the solid solution and the T1 phase and taking into account the shape of the phase precipitates, which cause a predominant increase in the volume and compressive stresses in the direction normal to the sheet. Similar studies for bulk alloy 1441 ingots with a cross section of 300 × 1100 mm show the absence of texture and the presence of residual stresses up to –20 MPa, the magnitude and sign of which are random.

Russian Metallurgy (Metally) publishes results of original experimental and theoretical research in the form of reviews and regular articles devoted to topical problems of metallurgy, physical metallurgy, and treatment of ferrous, nonferrous, rare, and other metals and alloys, intermetallic compounds, and metallic composite materials. The journal focuses on physicochemical properties of metallurgical materials (ores, slags, matters, and melts of metals and alloys); physicochemical processes (thermodynamics and kinetics of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, electrochemical, and other processes); theoretical metallurgy; metal forming; thermoplastic and thermochemical treatment; computation and experimental determination of phase diagrams and thermokinetic diagrams; mechanisms and kinetics of phase transitions in metallic materials; relations between the chemical composition, phase and structural states of materials and their physicochemical and service properties; interaction between metallic materials and external media; and effects of radiation on these materials.
