Abstract—Composites based on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) modified with a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluorovinylpropyl ether (PFA) in amounts of 5–15 wt % were prepared by extrusion compounding. The starting components differed in granulometric composition: PEEK—powder with a particle size of 50 μm , PFA— granules 1–5 mm in size. The influence of PFA content on morphology, crystalline structure, thermal, mechanical and tribological properties of the composites was studied. It was established that during compounding, due to the difference in melting temperatures of the matrix and the filler, the PFA is dispersed into microparticles of 1–3 μm, resulting in a phase-separated PEEK/PFA composite with a uniform distribution of spherical modifier inclusions. It was shown that adding 5–10 wt % PFA reduces the degree of crystallinity of PEEK from 19.3 to 12.4–14.0% without changing the melting temperature. At the same time, the relative elongation at break increases by more than 1.5 times and the Izod impact strength of notched specimens increases by 1.7–1.9 times. The best combination of mechanical and tribological characteristics is achieved at 10 wt % PFA, at which the coefficient of friction and the wear intensity are reduced threefold compared with unfilled PEEK: to 0.06 and 1.6 × 10–6 mm3/N m, respectively.

Russian Metallurgy (Metally) publishes results of original experimental and theoretical research in the form of reviews and regular articles devoted to topical problems of metallurgy, physical metallurgy, and treatment of ferrous, nonferrous, rare, and other metals and alloys, intermetallic compounds, and metallic composite materials. The journal focuses on physicochemical properties of metallurgical materials (ores, slags, matters, and melts of metals and alloys); physicochemical processes (thermodynamics and kinetics of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, electrochemical, and other processes); theoretical metallurgy; metal forming; thermoplastic and thermochemical treatment; computation and experimental determination of phase diagrams and thermokinetic diagrams; mechanisms and kinetics of phase transitions in metallic materials; relations between the chemical composition, phase and structural states of materials and their physicochemical and service properties; interaction between metallic materials and external media; and effects of radiation on these materials.
