Abstract
Introduction
Social participation of individuals with chronic physical disabilities is crucial because it examines their processes of integration, which contributes to the identification of their quality of life, inclusion in life situations, and processes of discrimination.
Objective
This study aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Maastricht Social Participation Profile (MSPP) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Materials and methods
The study involved experts in consulting who evaluated the scale’s content validity after retrospective translation into Turkish. The sample consisted of 130 volunteer patients diagnosed with RA by a rheumatologist. The reliability and validity of the scale used in the research was examined with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The Cronbach alpha reliability coefficients were calcula ted to test the internal consistency and reliability of scales. Also, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to evaluate the consistency or reproducibility of the scale.
Results
The MSPP research data showed an acceptable fit in terms of goodness-of-fit index values. Structural differences emerged in all sub-dimensions, with the modified MSPP Cronbach’s alpha calculated at 0.86 for the total scale.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Turkish version of the MSPP is valid, reliable, and appropriate tool for evaluating the social participation of RA patients. This study aims to fill the gap in the evaluation of social participation among chronic illness patients with RA in Turkey. By developing a scale for this purpose, it is expected to provide valuable guidance for future research.
