Abstract

Central bank gold vaults occupy a paradoxical position in contemporary monetary systems: They are among the most symbolically charged and institutionally significant spaces of modern finance, yet they have received almost no scholarly attention. This article argues that gold vaults cannot be understood solely as technical infrastructures for the safekeeping of bullion. Rather, they are hybrid spaces that oscillate between secrecy and ostentation, fortress and shrine, rational security apparatus and ritual site. Drawing on historical analysis, semiotics, and anthropological theories of value, I show how vaults materialize political imaginaries of sovereignty, embody cosmologies of value, and perform ritual functions that anchor collective belief in monetary order. The first part traces the evolution of vault architecture in France, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the United States, demonstrating how their militarization responded to shifting geopolitical and technological threats while simultaneously projecting state power. The second part examines the latent ritual and apotropaic dimensions of vaults in the post–Bretton Woods era, when gold's monetary role diminished even as its symbolic potency intensified. By foregrounding the dual nature of vaults as both defensive infrastructures and sacred repositories, the article reveals how these spaces help produce confidence, authenticate value, and sustain the mythic foundations of contemporary capitalism.
