Abstract

Phytoplankton play a central role in ocean biogeochemistry and understanding their composition and variability is critical for monitoring marine ecosystem dynamics. Continuous spectrophotometric measurements (using a Seabird Sci. AC-S) along ship tracks enable high-resolution measurements of particle spectral absorption ( a p λ ), and beam attenuation spectra ( c p λ ), across large spatial and temporal scales. Here, we present a new method to estimate non-algal particle absorption ( a NAP λ ) from AC-S data, using c p 660 to derive both a NAP 400 and the spectral slope of non-algal particles ( S NAP ). This method allows the estimation of the total spectra of a NAP λ directly from c p 660 , and consequently the derivation of phytoplankton absorption ( a ph λ ), retrieved by subtraction from AC-S a p λ . Through published Gaussian decomposition approach (Chase et al., Methods in Oceanography 2013; 7:110–124), 11 associated phytoplankton pigments absorption peaks ( a gaus λ ) are derived directly from a ph λ and related with pigment concentrations from this dataset, building new a gaus λ -pigments relationships and new coefficients. This new approach leads to improved decomposition between a NAP λ and a ph λ components using AC-S data, leading to a better quantification of phytoplankton composition and an improvement in the retrieval of pigments such as chlorophylls a, b and c. The improvement has been quantified in waters characterized by different optical conditions, from blue waters dominated by phytoplankton to coastal waters rich in suspended particles matter (SPM). The new method provides the greatest improvement in areas with high a NAP λ , almost halving the bias for stations characterized by these complex environmental conditions.

Limnology and Oceanography: Methods (ISSN 1541-5856) is a companion to ASLO''s top-rated journal Limnology and Oceanography, and articles are held to the same high standards. In order to provide the most rapid publication consistent with high standards, Limnology and Oceanography: Methods appears in electronic format only, and the entire submission and review system is online. Articles are posted as soon as they are accepted and formatted for publication. Limnology and Oceanography: Methods will consider manuscripts whose primary focus is methodological, and that deal with problems in the aquatic sciences. Manuscripts may present new measurement equipment, techniques for analyzing observations or samples, methods for understanding and interpreting information, analyses of metadata to examine the effectiveness of approaches, invited and contributed reviews and syntheses, and techniques for communicating and teaching in the aquatic sciences.
