Abstract
Introduction: The tropical plant Carica papaya L., which is a member of the Caricaceae family, is well known for its medicinal and nutritional qualities. The plant's leaves, fruits, seeds, and latex have all historically been used to treat inflammatory diseases, cancer, metabolic abnormalities, and infections. The objective of this review is to provide a thorough overview of the phytochemical composition, pharmacological activity, mechanisms of action, and clinical evidence that support its potential for therapeutic use.
Methods: Based on a thorough evaluation of the literature, this work is a narrative review. Electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were used to conduct a thorough search. Based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, pertinent peer-reviewed publications, including experimental research, clinical trials, and ethnomedical reports, were selected. The following keywords were used: phytochemistry, pharmacological activity, mechanisms of action, and Carica papaya. An integrative assessment of its therapeutic potential was produced by rigorously analysing and synthesizing the extracted data.
Results: Alkaloids (carpaine), flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol), phenolic acids, and enzymes (papain, chymopapain) are among the many bioactive substances found in Carica papaya. These substances have a variety of pharmacological actions, such as immunomodulatory, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antibacterial, and antidiabetic properties. Mechanistically, they reduce oxidative stress and inflammation by modulating important molecular pathways such as NF-κB, MAPK, and COX-2. Clinical research indicates that leaf extracts may have positive effects, especially in dengue-associated thrombocytopenia. High-dose seed extracts, however, could be harmful.
Discussion: Carica papaya's extensive phytochemical profile and capacity to control important molecular pathways involved in oxidative stress and inflammation are responsible for the vast range of pharmacological activity seen in this plant. Its promise as a therapeutic agent is highlighted by the merging of ancient knowledge with contemporary pharmacological research, particularly in infectious and inflammatory illnesses.
Conclusion: Carica papaya shows great promise as a nutraceutical and phytotherapeutic agent. Even though there is encouraging experimental and clinical evidence, more carefully planned research is needed to determine uniform dosages, long-term safety, and clinical efficacy for its wider therapeutic application.
