Abstract
The results of the research made by the staff of the Department of Heat Treatment and Metal Physics of the Ural Federal University on the processes of silicide and aluminide precipitation in the structure and their role in formation of the set of mechanical properties of titanium alloys are reviewed. It is shown that the S1-type silicides precipitated over phase boundaries reduce the impact toughness of the alloys, while the S2 silicides formed chiefly in the α-phase reduce the heat resistance characteristics. The role of the α2-phase in formation of properties of near-α-titanium alloys is considered. It is established that it is possible to control the formation of a two-phase (α + α2) structure of different types by varying the heat treatment modes and thus ensure the development of both heterogeneous and homogeneous transformations. It is shown that the homogeneous transformation mechanism provides greater ductility of the alloys compared to the heterogeneous one.
