Abstract
A review of bioinert titanium alloys based on metastable β-solid solution, which can be used as orthopedic implants is presented. The effect of β-stabilizers and neutral hardeners (Zr, Sn) on the properties (elastic modulus, strength, plasticity) of Ti – Nb alloys is considered. Experimental and computational data are used to show that in order to obtain a reduced elastic modulus (up to 50 – 55 GPa) in quenched condition, the Ti – Nb binary system should be alloyed additionally with Zr and/or Sn. Such alloying provides additional strengthening of the Ti – Nb alloys to up to σ0.2 = 450 – 650 MPa at an elongation of 10 – 40%.
