Abstract
The study examines the effect of noise in the current–voltage characteristic (IVC) of a Langmuir probe on the retrieved electron energy distribution function (EEDF). The investigation utilized a simulated IVC derived from distribution functions calculated using the Monte Carlo method on the axis of a hollow-cathode discharge in helium. The simulation incorporated an experimentally obtained plasma potential distribution. Noise of varying amplitudes was superimposed onto the model IVC, and the final distribution function was reconstructed from the noisy IVC using standard experimental processing techniques. Comparing the resulting EEDFs with the original calculated distribution functions established the reliable energy and dynamic ranges of the EEDF as a function of the added noise amplitude.
