Abstract
In this work, cationic palladium(II) complexes with triphenylphosphine (Ph3P) and/or diphenyl-2-pyridylphosphine (PyPh2P), stabilized by the dodecachloro-closo-dodecaborate anion [B12Cl12]2–, were synthesized for the first time. The synthesis was carried out in acetonitrile using a stepwise method involving ligand metathesis in the Pd(II) coordination sphere to form [PdL2Cl2] complexes (where L is a monodentate ligand) followed by the removal of chloride ions using Ag2[B12Cl12]. The structures of the resulting complexes [Pd(Ph3P)(CH3CN)2Cl]2[B12Cl12], [Pd(Ph3P)2(CH3CN)2][B12Cl12]·CH3CN, [Pd(PyPh2P)2(CH3CN)][B12Cl12]·3CH3CN, and [Pd(Ph3P)(PyPh2P)Cl]2[B12Cl12]·4CH3CN were determined using X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. Reaction schemes for complex formation were proposed, taking into account the reactant ratio and the trans-effect. The cytotoxicity of the synthesized compounds was investigated using MDCK cell cultures; the results showed moderate toxicity, which, combined with the inertness of the boron cluster anion, opens up prospects for developing new palladium-based radioprotective agents.
