Abstract

Aim: To assess hardness as well as resistance to fracture in the case of a reattached tooth fragment when different storage media are used.

Materials and methods: In this study, 60 permanent incisor teeth that were extracted for therapeutic reasons were enrolled and divided into four groups. Each group had 15 specimens (n = 15). The teeth of all the groups were sectioned, and the incisal third of the fragments were stored in respective storage media: group I (dry), group II [Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS)], group III (coconut water), and group IV (contact lens solution) for 24 hours. The fragments were reattached with a simple reattachment technique using a flowable composite. These teeth were then subjected to a universal testing machine for measuring the fracture resistance of the specimen. Then the obtained pieces were used to measure the hardness of the reattached fragment using a Vickers hardness tester. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and an unpaired t-test were used to check statistical significance.

Results: In group II (HBSS), the mean value of resistance to fracture was maximum, that is, 16.3787 N, which was followed by the coconut water group, that is, group III, with a value of 15.9467 N. Group IV (contact lens solution) had a mean value of 13.1267 N. Resistance to the occurrence of fracture was seen to be very less in the dry environment group, that is, group I, with a mean of 11.7067 N. The maximum hardness was seen with group II (HBSS) at 350.2000 Vickers hardness (HV), followed by group IV (contact lens solution) at 342.5333 HV, and group III (coconut water) with a mean of 342.3333 HV. The least hardness was seen with group I (dry environment) at 295.4667 HV. There was a significant difference in fracture resistance and hardness between these groups.
