Abstract
The vertical rock cliff bordering the Upper Town of Bonifacio (Southern Corsica, France) is susceptible to large-scale instability, primarily due to the fracturing of the rock mass and the presence of a geological layer susceptible to erosion at the base of the cliff. Since 2018, this cliff has been the focus of several studies to improve understanding of rock hazards in the Bonifacio Citadel area and developing risk management scenarios to be implemented. This article presents the contribution of 3D geomechanical modeling to the assessment of cliff stability. These models enabled the characterization of large-scale instabilities based on different scenarios, considering uncertainties relating to the location and the extent of existing fractures. The impact of the cliff undercutting extension (due to maritime erosion) was also assessed. The movement evolution was analysed at the sensor locations installed in the modelled area. The analysis of these sensors positioning (constrained by urbanization at the time of installation) aims to ultimately optimize the site monitoring.

Engineering geology is defined in the statutes of the IAEG as the science devoted to the investigation, study and solution of engineering and environmental problems which may arise as the result of the interaction between geology and the works or activities of man, as well as of the prediction of and development of measures for the prevention or remediation of geological hazards. Engineering geology embraces:
• the applications/implications of the geomorphology, structural geology, and hydrogeological conditions of geological formations;
• the characterisation of the mineralogical, physico-geomechanical, chemical and hydraulic properties of all earth materials involved in construction, resource recovery and environmental change;
• the assessment of the mechanical and hydrological behaviour of soil and rock masses;
• the prediction of changes to the above properties with time;
• the determination of the parameters to be considered in the stability analysis of engineering works and earth masses.
