Abstract
A new biphenyl derivative, 3′,4,5,5′-tetramethoxy-2-methyl-1,1′-biphenyl (1), along with the known 3′-hydroxyalternariol-5-O-methyl ether (2), 5′-methoxy-6-methylbiphenyl-2,3′,4-triol (3), and porric acid D (4) were isolated from the mangrove endophytic fungus Alternaria malorum FL39. The structure of compound 1 was deduced by analysis of comprehensive spectra. Compounds 1 and 4 exhibited moderate antifungal activities against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Additionally, compound 1 showed weak antifungal activity against Colletotrichum musae, whereas compounds 1–3 showed weak antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (serotypes O6).
