Abstract

Post-earthquake repair of bridge piers is typically evaluated under simplified unidirectional loading, although their seismic behavior under realistic multi-directional conditions remains insufficiently explored. In this paper, the seismic repair performance of post-earthquake-damaged hollow concrete bridge piers (HCBPs) is investigated using an improved 6-DOF multi-directional electro-hydraulic testing system. Glass FRP-confined high-strength non-shrink cementitious grout material (CGM) jackets have been proposed as a durable strategy to restore and enhance the structural performance of HCBPs. Large-scale cyclic tests were conducted under simultaneous quadriaxial translational and rotational degrees of freedom, with an amplitude derived from an experimentally validated fiber-based finite element model. The repaired RHCBP recovered 94.9% and 86.3% of the original lateral load capacity, while the resultant lateral load capacity and initial stiffness exceeded the original unidirectional values. The accumulative energy dissipation and resultant flexural capacity increased by 21.6% and 38.2%, respectively. Damage evolution and repair efficiency were quantitatively assessed using the Park–Ang damage index and 3D-DIC based strain mapping. An analysis-oriented cross-section model incorporating constitutive relationships for FRP-confined CGM and a force demand–capacity framework was developed to predict flexural capacity and plastic hinge relocation.

The past few decades have seen outstanding advances in the use of composite materials in structural applications. There can be little doubt that, within engineering circles, composites have revolutionised traditional design concepts and made possible an unparalleled range of new and exciting possibilities as viable materials for construction. Composite Structures, an International Journal, disseminates knowledge between users, manufacturers, designers and researchers involved in structures or structural components manufactured using composite materials. The journal publishes papers which contribute to knowledge in the use of composite materials in engineering structures. Papers deal with design, research and development studies, experimental investigations, theoretical analysis and fabrication techniques relevant to the application of composites in load-bearing components for assemblies, ranging from individual components such as plates and shells to complete composite structures.
