Abstract
Hydraulic cylinders act as pivotal actuators in high-end equipment covering aerospace, robotics and construction machinery. Traditional metal hydraulic cylinders have reached a weight-reduction limit, failing to meet escalating lightweight design demands. Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP), with exceptional specific strength, superior corrosion resistance and high design flexibility, is the optimal candidate for lightweight hydraulic cylinders. This paper comprehensively reviews the research progress, core technologies and engineering applications of CFRP hydraulic cylinders, and analyzes critical technical bottlenecks including bending resistance, sealing friction pair adaptation, oil passage design, detachability and seepage prevention. Based on pressure vessel classification standards, five major structural types and eight subtypes are standardized, with their distinct features and applicable scenarios clarified. The work further details design optimization methods, forming processes and core enabling technologies including dissimilar material joining and anti-leakage solutions. Typical cross-field engineering cases are summarized to verify practical feasibility. Finally, existing challenges in design theory, joining and sealing, process precision and testing systems are concluded, and future directions including multi-field coupled modeling, metal-liner-free fabrication and intelligent integration are prospected, providing a systematic reference for the technical innovation and industrial application of CFRP hydraulic cylinders.
期刊介绍:
The past few decades have seen outstanding advances in the use of composite materials in structural applications. There can be little doubt that, within engineering circles, composites have revolutionised traditional design concepts and made possible an unparalleled range of new and exciting possibilities as viable materials for construction. Composite Structures, an International Journal, disseminates knowledge between users, manufacturers, designers and researchers involved in structures or structural components manufactured using composite materials.
The journal publishes papers which contribute to knowledge in the use of composite materials in engineering structures. Papers deal with design, research and development studies, experimental investigations, theoretical analysis and fabrication techniques relevant to the application of composites in load-bearing components for assemblies, ranging from individual components such as plates and shells to complete composite structures.
