Abstract
Modern requirements for the eco-friendliness of materials are stimulating the search for biodegradable polymers with improved performance characteristics. Polylactide, obtained from renewable sources, offers high potential in this field, but its rigidity and brittleness limit its applications. In this study, the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) oligomer on the structural and physicomechanical properties of polylactide-based composites was studied. The content of poly(ethylene glycol) in the composites ranged from 5 to 15 wt %. Differential scanning calorimetry study demonstrated that the melting temperature and the degree of crystallinity of polylactide decrease with increasing content of the oligomer additive. Analysis of the X-ray diffraction patterns of the composites confirmed the formation of a more amorphous phase. Optical microscopy revealed changes in surface morphology and structural order. Composites with a poly(ethylene glycol) content of 10–15 wt % were characterized by improved relative elongation and acceptable level of strength, which expands the possibilities of their practical application.
