Abstract
This work presents the results of a comprehensive study of the initial stage of heterophase polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of water-insoluble oxyethylated polypropylene glycol (pluronic RPE3110). Using methods of dilatometry, static light scattering, gel permeation chromatography, and electron microscopy (cryo-TEM, SEM), the kinetics of the process, changes in the disperse composition of the monomer emulsion and polymer suspension, and the molecular weight characteristics of the polymer were studied in the range of conversion from 3% to 98%. It was established that at the initial stage, polymerization proceeds simultaneously via emulsion and suspension mechanisms. For the first time, it was shown that the polymer particles formed at the early stages exhibit surface activity (reducing the interfacial tension at the toluene/water interface to 24 mN/m) and can participate in the dispersion of the larger monomer droplets resulting in the formation of a suspension with a narrow particle size distribution.
