Abstract

Background: Engaging in physical and social activities, such as dance and music, supports mental well-being, cognitive functioning, and physical health in older adults. Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is a complementary practice that uses movement and creative expression to enhance emotional engagement and interpersonal connection. DMT has shown benefits in several clinical populations, but evidence in healthy older adults remains limited.

Methods: This study examined the potential impact of DMT on perceived quality of life, life satisfaction, and personal well-being in adults over 65. Twenty-five participants (17 women, 8 men) completed an 8-week DMT cycle with weekly sessions. A 1-hour session preceded and followed the cycle, during which participants completed WHOQoL-BREF, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Personal Wellbeing Index, and brief assessments of depressive symptoms (GDS) and sleep quality (PSQI) to characterise the sample.

Results: Repeated measures ANOVA models revealed significant improvements after the cycle in overall quality of life and social relationships. Participants over 70, who initially reported lower scores than younger participants, showed comparable gains following the cycle.

Conclusions: These findings suggest that DMT may foster a positive emotional climate and strengthen social interaction among older adults, including the oldest participants, highlighting its value as a group-based cycle aimed at supporting well-being in later life.
