Abstract

The changes in the modal parameters of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels exposed to damage were experimentally investigated in this study. For this purpose, 30 three-layer CLT panels were produced considering different configurations in terms of wood species, material properties, and layer arrangements. Monotonic lateral loading tests were performed to simulate the effects of lateral forces, typically induced by seismic actions. The modal parameters of the CLT panels in both the undamaged and damaged states were obtained through ambient vibration tests conducted before and after the monotonic loading tests. The Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) method was used to identify the modal parameters of specimens. The monotonic loading and ambient vibration tests revealed that structural damage considerably affected the modal parameters of the CLT panels, leading to a reduction in stiffness, and alterations in their dynamic behavior. After damage, the natural frequencies of the CLT panels decreased significantly, with maximum reductions of 67.29% in the first mode and 35.98% in the second mode. Spruce panels generally exhibited more consistent responses, whereas larger variations in vibrational response were observed for Alder and Hybrid panels. The results not only emphasized the importance of selecting appropriate wood species and layer configurations for CLT panels, but also showed that mechanical connection behavior could significantly influence the structural response.
