Abstract

In this study, zinc cadmium oxide (ZnO:Cd) nanoparticles were prepared using the technique of plasma jetting for different time periods of 15, 25, and 35 min. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of these time periods on the optical and structural properties of the produced nanoparticles. Plasma jetting technique provides precise control over the particle size and composition, which is very important, because it contributes to modifying the properties of the material to suit its future applications in optoelectronics, sensing, and catalysis. By examining X‑ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results, it has been established that increasing the plasma jetting exposure time improves the crystal arrangement and decorated the particle size. At 25 min, the crystals become more regular, and the particle sizes increase, while at 35 min, the crystal arrangement improves, but with an increase in internal distortions. According to the SEM examination, the particles become more homogeneous and smaller with increasing time. UV-Vis examination demonstrates that the absorbance increased with time, especially at 35 min, indicating more absorbance of UV light. The energy gap is larger in pure ZnO, but decreases with the addition of cadmium, indicating improved conductivity and reduced internal tension. According to the AFM, the surface is smoother and less rough with increasing exposure time. Overall, the study shows that increasing plasma exposure time improves crystalline ordering, absorbance, and surface roughness, which are very important factors for increasing the efficiency of applications in various fields. However, when the exposure time is increased significantly, internal deformations start to affect the overall stability of the material.
