Abstract
Steel slag is a major difficult-to-utilize by-product of the steel industry. The utilization of its tailings, remaining after crushing and magnetic separation of steel beads, holds a significant value. Due to their residual iron content and high levels of calcium and magnesium oxides, these tailings have the potential to be recycled back into the iron ore sintering process. In this study, high-temperature assimilation behavior of steel slag tailings (SST) was investigated using a micro-sintering approach. The effects of CaO addition (10–20 wt%) and temperature (1280 – 1320 °C) on their phase evolution and bonding behavior were systematically analyzed using thermodynamic calculations, TG–DSC, XRD, and SEM–EDS analyses. The results indicated that an appropriate CaO addition (15 wt%) promoted the formation of a continuous Ca2FeAlO5 bonding phase network, whereas excessive CaO promoted the RO phase formation and weakened the bonding structure. The optimal condition was identified as 1320 °C with the addition of 15wt% CaO, under which the highest bonding extent (1.03g/g) and compressive strength (184N) were achieved. These findings are anticipated to provide guidance for the application of SST in iron ore sintering.

The Process Safety and Environmental Protection (PSEP) journal is a leading international publication that focuses on the publication of high-quality, original research papers in the field of engineering, specifically those related to the safety of industrial processes and environmental protection. The journal encourages submissions that present new developments in safety and environmental aspects, particularly those that show how research findings can be applied in process engineering design and practice.
PSEP is particularly interested in research that brings fresh perspectives to established engineering principles, identifies unsolved problems, or suggests directions for future research. The journal also values contributions that push the boundaries of traditional engineering and welcomes multidisciplinary papers.
PSEP's articles are abstracted and indexed by a range of databases and services, which helps to ensure that the journal's research is accessible and recognized in the academic and professional communities. These databases include ANTE, Chemical Abstracts, Chemical Hazards in Industry, Current Contents, Elsevier Engineering Information database, Pascal Francis, Web of Science, Scopus, Engineering Information Database EnCompass LIT (Elsevier), and INSPEC. This wide coverage facilitates the dissemination of the journal's content to a global audience interested in process safety and environmental engineering.
