Abstract

This review provides insight into the basic properties of multilayer materials based on graphite and graphene oxides, covering the achievements in this field over the past 15 years. The methods for the synthesis of graphite oxide, which is one of the most thoroughly studied materials, and further transformations of graphite oxide on the way to graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are considered. The key synthetic transformations of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide as well as nitrated and fluorinated forms are summarized. The effect of various functional groups, defects, and disorder arising during oxidation or reduction reactions on the physicochemical and mechanical properties is investigated.
