Abstract
Environmental education plays a crucial role in shaping students’ sustainability practices, equipping them to tackle urgent environmental challenges of the future. In this regard, this study explores how environmental education influences the sustainability behaviors of Somali university students, aiming to inspire actions that contribute to environmental conservation and long-term sustainability. A total of 404 students from various faculties across Somali universities participated, with data collected through a structured questionnaire. Using Structural Equation Modeling and IPMA, the study uncovers environmental education awareness leads to pro-environmental behaviors both direct and indirect pathways. The results show that students’ concern for the environment and the value they place on sustainability significantly drive their involvement in environmental activities and volunteerism. Additionally, the study reveals that environmental engagement plays a key role student who actively participate in environmental initiatives are more likely to adopt sustainable practices over time. These findings highlight the need for Somali universities to go beyond raising awareness, creating opportunities for students to actively engage in sustainability efforts. This study offers valuable insights into how higher education institutions can foster sustainability, supporting both national environmental goals and global sustainability efforts.
