Abstract
Eosinophilia is a sign that occurs relatively frequently in clinical practice. This protocol outlines the definition of the different types of eosinophilia based on their location (peripheral or tissue), the measure used (absolute or relative), and intensity (mild, moderate, or severe). The concept, types, and causes of hypereosinophilic syndromes are reviewed. Subsequently, an initial assessment protocol is outlined for cases of eosinophilia that allows for classifying it into several groups: widespread forms (associated or not with HIV infection) and imported forms. Next, several relevant aspects of eosinophilia related to helminthiasis are detailed, particularly in regard to epidemiology, disease progression patterns, and direct and serological methods for etiological diagnosis. Finally, the importance of treating and managing this condition is highlighted, including a brief discussion of forms not related to parasitic causes and situations in which a specific etiological diagnosis cannot be reached.
