Abstract
We investigated the feasibility of a flywheel type uninterruptible power supply (FW-UPS) that uses an high temperature super conducting (HTS) induction machine (SIM). An FW-UPS using a SIM can maintain the voltage of a load during a failure of power line by self-excitation effect due to trapped magnetic fluxes in the HTS rotor windings of the SIM. This allows it to function as a UPS without the needs for expensive semiconductor power and synchronizing devices. Using a small-scale test model of a SIM, we conducted an experiment to investigate the self-excitation effect. We also studied the characteristics of a 3 MW SIM FW-UPS using the self-excitation effect for industrial use by a numerical simulation analysis. The results show that an industrial-scale FW-UPS using a SIM is feasible.
