Abstract
Objective
To explore the relationship between the presence of intimate partner violence in women and the risk of suicide.
Method
A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted, with intentional snowball sampling, using an online application of a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale and the Okasha Questionnaire. The sample consisted of 917 women between 18 and 65 years of age who had been in an emotional relationship with a man in the last 12 months.
Results
The predominant age group was between 25 and 39 years (49.8%), higher education (79.8%), and single marital status (51.2%). 60.3% of participants reported having experienced some type of violence in the last year. 39% of women who had no victims presented suicidal ideation, compared to 56.2% of women who were victims (P < .001). Regarding attempts, 13.4% of non-victim women have had at least one suicide attempt, compared to 19.1% of victims (P = .02).
Conclusions
The presence of intimate partner violence in the past year is significantly related to the risk of suicidal behavior in female victims.
