Abstract
Lignocellulosic nature of sunflower meal (SFM) is the main hindrance in its anaerobic digestion (AD). Therefore, the focus of the present study is to assess the influence of thermal pretreatment (TPT) on chemical and structural changes as well as biogas production of SFM. Therefore, TPT of SFM was performed at temperatures 120, 140, 160 and 180 °C and compared with untreated SFM. Reactor fed with SFM-180 °C showed the highest biogas yield of 873 NmL/gVS which is 29% higher as compared to untreated SFM. Images from scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed the appearances of new surfaces in pretreated SFM at 180 °C as compared to raw SFM. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed changes in chemical bonds due to the TPT of SFM at 180 °C. The modified Gompertz model (MGM) was best fitted on the TPT data of SFM and showed a shorter lag phase time as the TPT temperature increased. Changes in the lignocellulosic structure were the main reasons for optimizing the anaerobic process.
