Abstract
Thermal spray deposition shows potential value for producing lead-free piezoelectric ceramic coatings owing to its high deposition rate, large-area coverage, and suitability for open-environment processing. These attributes make thermal spray process particularly appealing for structural health monitoring (SHM), where scalable and large-scale environmentally friendly transducer integration is essential. Starting from a brief introduction to the principles of thermal spray, this review summarizes the recent progresses in the thermal spray fabrication of lead-free piezoelectric coatings, after the first success in obtaining potassium sodium niobate (KNN)- and bismuth sodium titanate (BNT)-based piezoelectric ceramic coatings using this method. The ultrasonic transducers enabled by the thermal-sprayed lead-free piezoelectric coatings for SHM are highlighted. The major challenges and future opportunities for advancing thermal-sprayed piezoelectric coatings toward SHM applications are discussed.
期刊介绍:
The International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology publishes cutting edge applied research and development work focused on commercialization of engineered ceramics, products and processes. The publication also explores the barriers to commercialization, design and testing, environmental health issues, international standardization activities, databases, and cost models. Designed to get high quality information to end-users quickly, the peer process is led by an editorial board of experts from industry, government, and universities. Each issue focuses on a high-interest, high-impact topic plus includes a range of papers detailing applications of ceramics. Papers on all aspects of applied ceramics are welcome including those in the following areas:
Nanotechnology applications;
Ceramic Armor;
Ceramic and Technology for Energy Applications (e.g., Fuel Cells, Batteries, Solar, Thermoelectric, and HT Superconductors);
Ceramic Matrix Composites;
Functional Materials;
