Abstract

The thymus is essential for T cell development and a decline in thymic health or a thymectomy therefore have profound clinical implications. Loss of thymic function might contribute to the uraemia-associated ageing of the T cell compartment, and new research is needed to clarify potential underlying mechanisms and effects on patient outcomes.
