Abstract
CCS Chemistry, Ahead of Print. While the versatile gem-diboryl unit is widely used in organic synthesis, its application in polymer science remains underexplored. Here we report a novel radical-mediated alternating copolymerization of readily available gem-diborylethylene with common 1,3-dienes (butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene), yielding well-defined polymers with precise alternating sequences. The alternating propagation is driven by the matched polarity and steric profiles of the monomers. The incorporated gem-diboryl moiety serves as a robust handle for diverse postpolymerization modifications, enabling rapid access to functional polymer libraries. Moreover, the olefinic backbone allows for on-demand metathesis degradation, efficiently yielding small-molecule gem-diboryl cyclohexene—a precursor to high-value cyclohexene derivatives.
