Abstract
Degradation of 361 L steel in corrosive solution has been paid attention, especially pitting corrosion. The post-processing technology is an important technique for maintaining relatively favorable mechanical properties to surface properties and corrosion resistance. This study employed laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) technology to fabricate 316 L stainless steel samples with four different build orientations of 0°, 45°, 60°, and 90°. These samples underwent post-processing, including heat treatment, shot peening (SP), and nitriding. Electrochemical corrosion tests were performed in 3.5 wt% NaCl at 25 °C to evaluate the effects of post-processing on the pitting corrosion of L-PBF 316 L stainless steel. The results indicate that heat treatment, SP, and nitriding post-processing techniques improve the pitting corrosion performance of the samples, with nitriding providing the most significant enhancement. Among the heat-treated samples, those treated at 450 °C exhibited improved corrosion resistance, with the best pitting corrosion resistance observed in the 0° build orientation, with a pitting potential of 0.611 V vs. Ag/AgCl. However, samples subjected to heat treatments at 750 °C and 1050 °C showed decreased corrosion resistance due to the presence of MnS inclusions. For SP-treated samples, the best corrosion performance was observed for the sample printed with the build orientation of 0° and the samples were subjected to SP treatment at 0.2 MPa for 3 min, with a pitting potential of 0.653 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Nevertheless, increasing the intensity or duration of SP treatment resulted in decreased pitting corrosion resistance. The pitting corrosion resistance of nitrided samples increased with the increase in build orientation, with the best resistance observed at a build orientation of 90°, with a pitting potential of 0.766 V vs. Ag/AgCl.
