Abstract
Methods to increase the energy efficiency and productivity of electroslag remelting (ESR), one of the most widely used special electrometallurgy (SEM) methods, are studied. The aim of this work is to analyze the energy efficiency of dc ESR in comparison with the traditional ac ESR technology, including the use of rotation of the consumable electrode body. The research technique includes a series of full-scale experiments performed on a semi-industrial A-550 ESR furnace. The most effective technology is found to be straight-polarity dc ESR with electrode rotation. The increase in remelting rate is 34% compared to the traditional ac ESR technology. The decrease in the energy consumption is 24%. Reversed-polarity dc ESR showed a deterioration in the performance characteristics. The increase in the current consumption is 9%. The decrease in the remelting rate is 21%. Electrode rotation improves the energy efficiency of remelting under all current conditions.
期刊介绍:
Russian Metallurgy (Metally) publishes results of original experimental and theoretical research in the form of reviews and regular articles devoted to topical problems of metallurgy, physical metallurgy, and treatment of ferrous, nonferrous, rare, and other metals and alloys, intermetallic compounds, and metallic composite materials. The journal focuses on physicochemical properties of metallurgical materials (ores, slags, matters, and melts of metals and alloys); physicochemical processes (thermodynamics and kinetics of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, electrochemical, and other processes); theoretical metallurgy; metal forming; thermoplastic and thermochemical treatment; computation and experimental determination of phase diagrams and thermokinetic diagrams; mechanisms and kinetics of phase transitions in metallic materials; relations between the chemical composition, phase and structural states of materials and their physicochemical and service properties; interaction between metallic materials and external media; and effects of radiation on these materials.
