Abstract
Abstract: Perinatal palliative care represents an interdisciplinary and multiprofessional interface within the care context of perinatology. The three distinct patient groups are: extremely premature infants at the limit of viability, infants prenatally diagnosed life-limiting conditions, and acutely and severely ill newborns. This paper presents the approach for prenatally diagnosed life-limiting conditions at a university Level 1 perinatal care center and contextualizes it within the existing literature. Central challenges include: the uncertainty of prognosis, integration into existing care structures, personnel and time resources, communication with expectant parents, and the process of shared decision-making concerning therapy goals. Summary: An early, integrative and collaborative care approach by developing and formalizing written procedures for the prenatal, delivery, and postnatal periods results in high parental satisfaction. The uncertainty of the prognosis must often be continuously taken into account.
