Abstract
Introduction: Elastic resistance bands have been widely adopted in exercise programs for all age-groups. However, increased use of these resistance bands has been associated with a rise in blunt facial and ocular injuries, of which severe ones may require surgical intervention.
Case presentation: A 15-year-old male with high myopia presented 2 weeks after being struck in the left eye by an exercise resistance band. Examination revealed a large 12 mm × 15 mm retinal hole with rolled edges in the temporal periphery and a macula-involving retinal detachment with early proliferative vitreoretinopathy in the left eye. Following 3 vitreoretinal surgeries, retina reattachment was accomplished. At last follow-up at postoperative year 1 from the 3rd surgery, best-corrected visual acuity was 20/40 with a gas-permeable contact lens.
Conclusion: This case report demonstrates that favorable visual outcomes may be achievable despite macula-involving rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and early proliferative vitreoretinopathy from an elastic band injury.
This peer-reviewed online-only journal publishes original case reports covering the entire spectrum of ophthalmology, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, toxicities of therapy, supportive care, quality-of-life, and survivorship issues. The submission of negative results is strongly encouraged. The journal will also accept case reports dealing with the use of novel technologies, both in the arena of diagnosis and treatment. Supplementary material is welcomed. The intent of the journal is to provide clinicians and researchers with a tool to disseminate their personal experiences to a wider public as well as to review interesting cases encountered by colleagues all over the world. Universally used terms can be searched across the entire growing collection of case reports, further facilitating the retrieval of specific information. Following the open access principle, the entire contents can be retrieved at no charge, guaranteeing easy access to this valuable source of anecdotal information at all times.
