Abstract
A proton-conducting solid acid fuel cell (SAFC) is studied for the direct conversion of ammonia. The SAFC is supported by an electrolyte consisting of cesium dihydrogen phosphate (CsH2PO4) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) to improve stability and proton conductivity. The effect of electrolyte composition, anode catalyst, and moisture on the cell performance is investigated. The result shows that the SAFC containing the CsH2PO4–TiO2 (8:2) composite electrolyte and a Pt/TiO2–Pt/C anode has the optimum power density of 1.20 and 0.64 mWcm−2 in H2 and NH3 at 230°C, respectively. Electrical performance could be stabilized by prolonged exposure to moisture and further improved by the use of a thinner electrolyte.
