Abstract
This chapter discusses kunqu performers’ collaborative creativity and dedicated efforts to make their shows continuously appealing and meaningful. As kunqu performers stage scripted and well-known stories with codified performance practices and materials, they nuance their acts to showcase their personal talents and to serve audience expectations and tastes. A prime example of such kunqu creativity and fine-tuned products is the Jade Hairpin ( Yuzan ji ) and its numerous renditions.History reports that Gao Lian (1527-1603?) and his artistic partners collaboratively created a performance script of the drama, and that generations of kunqu performers have creatively/recreatively realized the drama into distinctive shows. Each would feature individualized interpretations and/or adjustments of what Gao Lian and his partners authored, and what legendary performers have taught their disciples. To illustrate the ways kunqu shows evolve, this chapter presents comparative analyses of five different renditions of the “Zither Seduction” (“Qintiao) scene from the JadeHair Pin .
