Abstract
Augmented reality (AR) offers innovative solutions for promoting sustainability by raising awareness and encouraging eco-friendly practices. However, its use presents ethical challenges, particularly concerning data privacy, as AR systems often collect sensitive user information that could be misused. The environmental footprint of AR technology, including energy use and electronic waste, also complicates its sustainability benefits. Socially, AR has the potential to increase environmental education and community engagement, yet it risks deepening the digital divide by excluding those without access to advanced technology. Additionally, AR can lead to misinformation or biased representations of sustainability, influencing user behavior without transparency. In the workplace, while AR may reduce waste and improve efficiency, it could also disrupt jobs and labor markets. To ensure AR supports sustainability equitably, addressing these ethical and social implications is essential for responsible development and adoption.
