Abstract
Abstract: Keratoconus is a progressive corneal ectasia, characterised by stromal thinning, conical protrusion and irregular astigmatism. While conservative measures and contact lenses are sufficient in early stage, advanced cases require surgical intervention. Corneal allogeneic intrastromal ring segments (CAIRS) represent a novel approach: donor tissue is transplanted ("keratoplasty") into the corneal stroma, leading to flattening of the cone, regularisation of the corneal surface and improvement in visual acuity. Since their first description by Jacob et al. in 2018 worldwide experience has grown.
