Abstract

The scope of this paper was to translate and adapt the Attitudes Toward Obese Persons Scale (ATOP), known as ATOP-BR, to the Brazilian socio-cultural context,. It involved a methodological study conducted in six stages: 1) translation by two independent translators; 2) synthesis of the translations; 3) back-translation by two native translators; 4) evaluation by an expert committee to assess the equivalence between the original scale and the Brazilian version, as well as ensuring the use of anti-stigmatizing language; 5) content validation using the Delphi method, conducted by a panel of experts; 6) pre-final version test. The items of the original ATOP scale, when adapted to the Portuguese-language version (ATOP-BR), achieved an adequate degree of semantic, idiomatic, cultural, and conceptual equivalence. During the pre-final version testing stage, the instrument was found to be easy to understand. The ATOP-BR scale was satisfactorily translated and adapted for the Brazilian population. It also demonstrated good comprehensibility and met the evaluation objectives, showing strong potential for use in research on obesity-related stigma in the Brazilian context.
