Abstract
In this article, we study reactive formation control for multirobot systems, where robots maintain safety while achieving formation objectives. In complex environments, preserving formation shape often conflicts with safety requirements. Therefore, we allow temporary formation deviations to avoid hazards (e.g., obstacles) and automatic recovery afterward. To address this, we propose a distributed control Lyapunov function–control barrier function (CLF-CBF)-based quadratic program controller, where formation goals are encoded as distributed CLF conditions and safety constraints as CBF conditions. Sufficient distributed CLF and CBF conditions are derived to guarantee controller feasibility, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through simulation studies.

In the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, the IEEE Control Systems Society publishes high-quality papers on the theory, design, and applications of control engineering. Two types of contributions are regularly considered:
1) Papers: Presentation of significant research, development, or application of control concepts.
2) Technical Notes and Correspondence: Brief technical notes, comments on published areas or established control topics, corrections to papers and notes published in the Transactions.
In addition, special papers (tutorials, surveys, and perspectives on the theory and applications of control systems topics) are solicited.
